Thiago Martins de Melo, PIPA Prize Finalist in 2014, participates in “L’île aux Mythes” (“The Island of Myths”), on view at Galerie La Box, run by the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art de Bourges (ENSA-Bourges). The group exhibition features works by eight artists from the Servais Family Collection, all of them combining their cultural origins to the contemporary world, often using traditional techniques and ancestral narratives to give substance to their works.
Here, Martins de Mello develops his obsessional pictorial practice, depicting his wife’s prolific dream. Combining historical figures, culturally diverse populations and the spiritual, mythical, indigenous and African entities of Brazil, he creates on the canvas a battlefield in which the struggles and the history of these communities is conveyed.
Martins de Mello is the only artist in “L’île aux Mythes” to come from the Americas; all the other seven remaining artists to take part in the exhibition come from either Africa, such as Otobong Nkanga, from Nigeria, or Meschac Gaba, from Benin; or Asia, like Khadim Ali, from Pakistan; Yoon Ji Seon, from South Korea; Shine Shivan, from India; Santi Wangchuen, from Thailand; and Entang Wiharso, from Indonesia.
