One of PIPA’s main objective, since its inception in 2010, has been to support, promote and give visibility to the Brazilian contemporary art scene. One of the main tools in contributing to the dissemination of information and knowledge on the domestic production of contemporary art has been through PIPA’s websites. There are currently over 350 artists featured on our websites. Over the past 7 years, we have been able to constitute a significant map of the current contemporary artistic scene in Brazil and to consolidate the website as an online research platform, a window into Brazilian contemporary art. The development of this archive, as Fernando Cocchiarale – MAM-Rio curator and PIPA Prize Counselor– writes in his text for PIPA Prize 2016 catalogue, “contributes to the comprehension and promotes the diffusion of our art both nationally and internationally”.
On the artists’ profile pages, one can find images of works, critical texts, curriculum, biography, and video-interviews produced exclusively for PIPA Prize. The interviews are an opportunity for the artists to discuss their creative processes, qualifications, motivations, work environment, expectations and opinions in relation to their trajectories and productions. The interviews are an excellent way for the public to better understand the artistic production of the nominees through the words of the artists themselves, allowing for a more personal exchange between viewer and spectator.
On Sunday, July 16th, the first round of PIPA Online will begin. The online category of the Prize is open to all nominees of this current edition and is dependent upon the publics participation in choosing the winner. The best way to prepare for the voting is to research the artist’s pages: there, you can find, reunited, artwork images, critical texts, videos and curriculum of each of this edition’s participants. Another great way to get to know the artists better is by watching the video-interviews we produced in partnership with Do Rio Filmes. Available on our YouTube Channel, they uncover, in a dynamic and informative manner, the creative process and background of each of the PIPA Prize 2017 nominees. Meet the 53 participating artists below, watch the exclusive interviews and get ready to vote !
