Marina Rheingantz participates in the Biennial of Painting

(Deinze, Machelen-aan-de-Leie and Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium)

Taking place in three local museums of the Lys region at the same time (namely the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, the Roger Raveelmuseum and the Museum van Deinze en de Leiestreek), the Biennial of Painting reaches its sixth edition this year. The event features works by 56 artists, spamming a time period of approximately 150 years.

The theme of landscape, one of the most traditional genres in the history of painting, guides this edition of the biennial. Although canvases by masters such as Constant Permeke and Valerius De Saedeleer are a sure presence in the exhibition, they’ll be showcased side-by-side with contemporary takes on the genre, for example, those of the Brazilian artist Marina Rheingantz. A PIPA Prize finalist in 2015, she is famous for leaving small traces of industrialization in her otherwise idyllic representations of Brazilian landscapes.

Last but not least, not only paintings will make up the Biennial of Painting this year. Seven contemporary films selected by curator Cis Bierinckx are screened at MDD as part of the exhibition, engaging with the landscape both cinematographically and thematically.
