On this interview, Henrique César answers a question of the curator Thereza Farkas and tells how his references are all around him. For the artist, anything can influence what happens in his studio. “I have an idea of a performance. Then, instead of writing about this performance i get my gouache and some paper. Then I start drawing, for example, a scene of this performance.”

Since the first year of the prize PIPA, in 2010, Matrioska Filmes produces video-interviews with the PIPA nominees.

Pointing out the importance of this production, MAM-Rio’s curator, Luiz Camillo Osorio, says:

When PIPA invited Matrioska film production to make these videos, its goal was to build a small database on Brazilian contemporary art. If the prize aims to recognize and distinguish, the building of a contemporary memory looked for an amplified analysis of the circuit. (…)

We are sure that the continuity of these records and their combination with the renewal of the artists’ pages – that has to be made in partnership with the artists and their respective galleries – will maximize the relevance of this database. A growing number of interested people, from researchers to collectors, have began using the PIPA website for the benefit of all. - extract from the text “Hunger for files”

Blind Field

Brazil has long been called “the country of the future.” From the dramatic construction of the ultramodern capital of Brasília in the late 1950s to the country’s status as an emerging economic powerhouse in the 21st century, Brazilian national identity is inextricably intertwined with the idea of its potentiality. Yet the Brazilian saying from which this idea derives is more complex, for it suggests that the notion of potentiality is itself something of a mirage, an illusion that blinds its citizens to the reality of the present day. In 1970, the French sociologist and philosopher Henri Lefebvre described the “blind field” as a transitional zone that lies between socio-economic modes of production and escapes comprehension within existing ideological paradigms. This exhibition takes up blindness as a critical category, a metaphor for the way in which the obstruction of perception can illuminate alternate modes of knowledge and experience. It focuses on a young generation of artists working in Brazil who offer a critical perspective on processes of transition within contemporary society, be it from the public space of the street to the virtual zone of the computer screen, or the scale of local communities to the structure of large-scale political action. These works speak to the complexity and heterogeneity of an art milieu that is both tied to the local and manifestly global in reach.

The Catalan Ministry of Culture presents the show Passant pàgina. El llibre com a territori d’art (Turning the page: the book as territory for art) as part of the travelling programme promoted by the Ministry through the Directorate General for Cultural Promotion and Cooperation. Co-produced by Arts Libris, Raíña Lupa and Fundació Comunicació Gràfica and curated by Rocío SC Santa Cruz and Òscar Guayabero, the exhibition is structured around the book as a form of artistic expression that currently has significant interest for contemporary artists and graphic artists.

The artist’s book is a plastic form of expression that emerged in the second half of the 20th century and specifically in 1963, when Edward Ruscha published the first edition of Twentysix Gasoline Stations. Since then, the most avant-garde artists have decided to use the book, paradoxically a very traditional literary format, as a tool for breaking with previous art.

Ruscha’s works, poesia concreta in the 1960s and Tàpies and Brossa’s work Novel·la (Novel) in our own country began the concept of the artist’s book.

The artist’s book assumes awareness of the book as its own artistic entity and creates a new independent genre, which is a genre of contemporary art. It is a phenomenon concentrated in Barcelona and Catalonia by extension, but with connections to cities like London, Brussels and Berlin.

The works that bring the exhibition together are paradigmatic of production over the last decade, and especially the last five years, and also include key references to works created between the 1960s and 1970s in each of the show’s six sections:
Contemporary illustrated book
Artist’s notebook
Collections
Poets/artists
The artist’s book
Beyond the page

Curated by:
Rocío SC Santa Cruz and Òscar Guayabero

Parcours is curated by Florence Derieux and is open to the public.

Our Role
Connecting the international art community has been Art Basel’s goal since its beginning. Now, over forty years later, it ranks as the premier show of its kind, presenting 20th and 21st century art with a strong curatorial perspective. Its tradition of excellence across a wide range of genres offers visitors the most vital art that the world’s best galleries can offer.
In both Basel and Miami Beach now, and in Hong Kong moving forward, the week of the Art Basel show teems with parallel exhibitions and cultural events, creating an exciting environment that deepens and strengthens the relationship between gallerists, artists, curators and collectors.

Our Shows
Three annual shows bring the artworld together in some of the world’s most exciting venues: Basel, in the heart of Europe; Miami Beach, at the nexus of North America and Latin America; and Hong Kong, the Asian city where East meets West. Together, nearly 200,000 visitors view works of art presented by over 500 of the world’s leading galleries.
Each show is defined by its host city, with participating galleries showing artworks unique to the region, and parallel programming produced in collaboration with the region’s local institutions. Every artistic medium is represented: paintings, sculpture, installations, videos, multiples, prints, photography and performance. Special sectors structure the show, providing different presentation formats for galleries and artists, alongside special sectors overseen by leading international curators.

Trafaria Prata, by Joana Vasconcelos

Casa Triângulo is pleased to announce the participation of Joana Vasconcelos at the 55th Venice Biennale, representing Portugal.

Vasconcelos’ project, curated by Miguel Amado, addresses the shared history of Portugal and Venice. The worldwide networks of communication established between Portugal and Venice during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance contributed towards the redefining of the imago mundi. Vasconcelos reflects upon the contact zone between Portugal and Venice in the contemporary period: an imaginary based on the sea and on the maritime trade as a result of equivalent geographies.

Vasconcelos explores three notions or images common to Lisbon and Venice: water [River Tagus and Venice Lagoon], navigation and the ship. She deals with a symbol of Lisbon, the cacilheiro, a ferryboat that connects the two banks of the River Tagus, which corresponds to the emblematic Venice vaporetto. She thus transforms one ferryboat, the “Trafaria Praia”, simultaneously turning it into a floating pavilion and an artwork. During the Venice Biennial, the “Trafaria Praia” will both be moored next to the Giardini – the most important site in the Venice Biennial – and sail around the Venice lagoon, taking visitors from the Giardini to the Punta Della Dogana [the main route].

Vasconcelos covers the outsider of the “Trafaria Praia”, from the prow to the stern, with a panel of blue and hand white hand painted tiles that reproduces a contemporary view of Lisbon, from the Bugio Tower o the Vasco da Gama Tower. This piece takes its inspiration from a key piece of Portuguese tilework, the Great Panorama of Lisbon, attributed to Gabriel del Barco and dating from 1700, which shows Lisbon before the earthquake of 1755. The piece is produced in the Viúva Lamego Ceramics Factory, which is well-known for its long-lasting and regular collaboration with artists.

On the central area of the deck of the “Trafaria Praia”, Vasconcelos makes an environment based on textiles and light that recall typical works of hers such as the series “Valkyries” [since 2004] or Contamination [2008-10]. This piece consists of coloured, organic forms hand made in crochet and other fabrics, which incorporate LED lamps. These structures appear from the walls and the ceiling, “involving” the visitors in an uncanny, “uterine” atmosphere which generates an experience that is both intellectual and sensorial.

On the rest of the deck area and on the quarter-deck of the “Trafaria Praia”, Vasconcelos creates multiple areas, from a reception desk to a shop, as well as a stage. This space is for promoting Portuguese culture through the organization of several events, among which there are concerts and seminars. Of special note is the programming for the opening days of the Venice Biennial, which is made of daily performances by composers and interpreters of many different musical expressions, ranging from Fado to improvised electronic music.

The Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia) – currently presided over by Paolo Baratta – has for over a century been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Ever since its foundation, it has been at the forefront in the research and promotion of new artistic trends. In Venice, it organises international events in the field of the contemporary arts that are amongst the most important of their kind in the world.

55th International Art Exhibition
The Encyclopedic Palace
1st June > 24th November 2013

The 55th International Art Exhibition will take place in Venice from June 1st to November 24th, 2013 at the Giardini and at the Arsenale, as well as in various venues the city.
