Ricardo Basbaum

Born in 1961, São Paulo, Brazil. Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

About the artist

Ricardo Basbaum is an artist, writer and curator.
Works around social and interpersonal relationships, developing a communicative framework to
enable the circulation of actions and forms. With diagrams, drawings, texts and installations, has
created dialogical situations in which the individual personal experience of the participating actors and
viewers is a decisive and relevant aspect.

Recent solo shows and projects include sistema-cinema (ccsp) (Centro Cultural São Paulo, 2009);
and membranosa-entre (NBP) (Galeria Luciana Brito, 2009); re-projecting (utrecht) (Casco, Utrecht,
2008); la société du spectacle (& NBP) (kunstraum lakeside, Klagenfurt, 2007) and psiu-ei-oi-olá-não
(A Gentil Carioca, Rio de Janeiro, 2004).

Exhibited at Välparaíso inTERvenciones (Valparaíso, Chile, 2010); 5 x 5 Castelló Premi Internacional
d’Art Contemporani (Espai d’art contemporani de Castelló, Espanha, 2010); 7ª Bienal do Mercosul
(2009); 7th Shanghai Biennale (2008) and at documenta 12 (2007). Presented work at Imagine Action
(Lisson Gallery, London), among other group shows and projects.

Co-curated “On Difference #2” (Kunstverein Stuttgart) and “pogovarjanja/conversations/conversas”
(with Bojana Piskur, Skuc Gallery, Ljubljana), both in 2006.

Author of “Além da pureza visual” (Zouk, 2007). Contributed to “Art after conceptual art” (Ed.
Alexander Alberro and Sabeth Buchmann, Generali Foundation, MIT Press, 2006).

PhD in Arts, Universidade de São Paulo (2008).

Works as Professor at the Instituto de Artes, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro and at
Faculdade Santa Marcelina (São Paulo).
