The PIPA 2012 exhibition happened, at MAM-Rio, from October 6th to December 2nd, 2012, with works from the four finalists of the Prize’s third edition: Marcius Galan, Matheus Rocha Pitta, Rodrigo Braga and Thiago Rocha Pitta.
Marcius Galan, the big winner of PIPA 2012, presented the work “Obra de arte em cinco vias” [Work of art in five copies], 2012, inkjet on paper
21 x 29,7cm.
This work was made of six document copies in various colors, framed. Amongst them, one was entitled “public copy” and its sheets could be detached by the exhibition visitors; another one contained the text of a contract.
Matheus Rocha Pitta assembled the sculpture “Juízo Final” [Last Judgement], 2012, wooden pallets, box cartons and plastic.
Each pile measured 115 x 115 x 115cm.
The work was mede of 1080 liters of milk, with the expiration date due to December 2nd (last day of the exhibition) and 1080 emptied milk cartons, expiring on the same date;
and “Laje # 4 (leite)” [Laje #4 (milk)], 2011, with photography, drawing and collage techniques on concrete, milk carton and paper
22 x 33 x 3 cm.
Rodrigo Braga, Popular Vote 2012 Winner, brought 9 photographs to MAM-Rio:
“sem título”[untitled], 2011, photograph, 120 x 80cm;
“Biólito”, 2010, photograph, 60 x 90cm;
“Desejo Eremita” [Hermit desire] (2, 3, 5, 7 and 14), 2009, photograph, 50 x 75cm;
“Fato” (da série Paisagens) [Fact (of the Landscapes series)], 2008,photograph, 90 x 60cm;
and “Sereia” [Mermaid], 2007, photograph, 180 x 120cm.
Thiago Rocha Pitta presented the video “Danae nos jardins de Górgona ou nostagia da pangéia” [Danae at the gardens of Gorgon or pangea nostalgia], 2011, 14′;
and a floor sculpture named “Monumento a deriva continental #4″ [Monument to continental drift #4], 2012, cement on fabric, 210 x 170 x 60cm.
During the voting period for the category PIPA Popular Vote (October 6th to November 18th), when buying a ticket for the show, each visitor was entitled to vote on their favorite artist. The vote was secret.
Rodrigo Braga was the most voted artist by the public. He won the Popular Vote award and the prize of R$20,000.
The four artists also competed for the main award, PIPA 2012, in the value of R$100,000 being part of the money for an Artist Residency Program at Gasworks in London. The winner was Marcius Galan.
In this category the winner is chosen by the Award Jury, based on the works at the show and on their portfolios.
The four finalists received a donation of R$ 10,000 (ten thousand Reais). This amount was given as a contribution for the preparation of the works for the exhibition.
The PIPA exhibition is always held at MAM-Rio, Av. Infante Dom Henrique, 85 – Parque do Flamengo – Rio de Janeiro.
