PIPA 2018

PIPA Prize is a partnership between PIPA Institute and the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-Rio). It was created in 2010 to be the most prominent Brazilian Visual Arts award. After seven editions, it has developed as the main research platform on Brazilian contemporary art.

The Prize was created with the aim to promote Brazilian art and artists, and MAM-Rio. Stimulating the domestic contemporary art production; motivating and supporting new (but not necessarily young) Brazilian artists, besides being an alternative model for the third sector.

PIPA’s goal is to award Brazilian artists with a recent trajectory, consistent production, whose works are already in evidence and known in the Brazilian contemporary art scene.
There are no entries to run for the Prize. The artists that take part in the Award are nominated by the Nominating Committee, which changes yearly.

It is held annually and any artists with works in any medias can be nominated, without age restrictions.

View below a diagram explaining the dynamic of the Prize:

  • PIPA winner = R$130,000, a part of this value will be used to fund the winner’s participation in an international artist residency programme at Residency Unlimited. The winner is selected by the Award Jury.
  • PIPA Popular Vote Exhibition winner = R$ 24,000. The winner is the artist with the most votes given by the public at MAM-Rio.
  • PIPA Online winner = R$ 10,000. The artist with the greatest number of votes given by the public on PIPA’s website.
  • PIPA Online Runner Up = R$ 5,000. The second most voted artist on PIPA’s website.
