Last days | Tropicalisms

Tropicalisms is the first exhibition of contemporary Brazilian artists in Poland: the artistic group Chelpa Ferro and Jonathas de Andrade. The exhibition refers to memory and its representation, the form of a document, fiction, the past and present, locality and remote exoticism.

The exhibition will be on display at the Gdansk City Gallery, Powroznicza Street, 23.09.12 – 06.01.13. In conjunction with the exhibition a performance by Chelpa Ferro and Langfurtka will be presented at the Batycki Factory in the borough of Dolne Miasto. The display will be followed by a bilingual publication: Tropikalizmy, including a collection of interrelated texts by Polish and Brazilian critics and theoreticians, focusing on post-colonialism and performance.

Jonathas de Andrade works with photography, installation, and film to document the shifting terrain of private narratives within larger social spaces, exploring such themes as failed modernity and cultural amnesia. In his work, the act of photographing represents a crucial creative tool, but also acts as a historical device; a medium spanning fiction and document that enables a dialogue between action, research, architecture and state census. Exploring social and cultural conditions of place, de Andrade employs investigative processes of researching, mapping and surveying – using historical and archaeological documents and excavated artefacts to gently weave new fictions. His work is none the less about individual memory- personal experiences that start to resemble a collective one.

“Tratado Elementar de Arquitetura” | Last days

Artist Regina de Paula presents the exhibition “Tratado Elementar de Arquitetura”(Elemental Treaty on Architecture), curated by Marcelo Campos, at the Mercedes Viegas Arte Contemporânea Gallery.

The individual by artist Regina Paula speaks of human existence in the relationship with the utopic desire of construction, creating connections between classic and modernist architecture and the landscape of the city. “Tratado Elementar de Arquitetura” is composed of videos, objects, photographs and paintings assembled in two groups that question the vision of Regina de Paula about certain notions of space. In the exhibition Regina puts in question some aspects of existence: the impossibility of achieving utopia, the contradictory mobility of cities, and sense of transience that time imposes to everything.

“Place of Residence” | Last days in Shangai

ShanghART Gallery presents a group exhibition, “Place of Residence-with Artists from Brazil and China”, on October 12th in both ShanghART Main Space and H-Space.  One of the first exhibitions to include active artists in Brazil and China, it marks the starting point for a larger project – BRICS.
The show brings PIPA nominated artists Alexandre VoglerMariana ManhãesMarina Rheingantz and Pablo Lobato.

Despite the title, ‘Place of Residence’, it is not the exhibition’s purpose to solely dwell on the artists’ geographical, cultural, historical differences and their impact on artists’ creations. As more and more contemporary artists try to combine their own life experiences and thoughts into their works, they try to present works in various media in a specific point of view to reflect the reality of life and to deeply engage an audience. Thus, ‘Place of Residence’ is no longer about boundaries or confinement. It concerns more closely with life. Artists’ expressions through objects of everyday life embody the symbolic social and cultural significations that would provide open doors for the audience to read and understand contemporary art.
