Tropicalisms is the first exhibition of contemporary Brazilian artists in Poland: the artistic group Chelpa Ferro and Jonathas de Andrade. The exhibition refers to memory and its representation, the form of a document, fiction, the past and present, locality and remote exoticism.
The exhibition will be on display at the Gdansk City Gallery, Powroznicza Street, 23.09.12 – 06.01.13. In conjunction with the exhibition a performance by Chelpa Ferro and Langfurtka will be presented at the Batycki Factory in the borough of Dolne Miasto. The display will be followed by a bilingual publication: Tropikalizmy, including a collection of interrelated texts by Polish and Brazilian critics and theoreticians, focusing on post-colonialism and performance.
Jonathas de Andrade works with photography, installation, and film to document the shifting terrain of private narratives within larger social spaces, exploring such themes as failed modernity and cultural amnesia. In his work, the act of photographing represents a crucial creative tool, but also acts as a historical device; a medium spanning fiction and document that enables a dialogue between action, research, architecture and state census. Exploring social and cultural conditions of place, de Andrade employs investigative processes of researching, mapping and surveying – using historical and archaeological documents and excavated artefacts to gently weave new fictions. His work is none the less about individual memory- personal experiences that start to resemble a collective one.
