Tomorrow, June 22nd | 2013 Finalists’ Announcement

Meet tomorrow who are the four artists who were chosen by PIPA Board to make an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, and who will run for PIPA’s two main categories.
This year we have two women and two men among the four finalists. They are from different places and work with different medias.
They will run for PIPA, a prize of R$100,000 ( including an international residency – this year in a different country) and for PIPA Popular Vote Exhibition, a prize of R$20,000.
Check the dates of the exhibition and remember the previous editions.

Interview with Henrique César | New video

Luiz Camillo Osorio says that the videos made with PIPA’s artists aims to build a small database on Brazilian contemporary art.
This week we have a new video with the artist Henrique Cesar, who is a PIPA first time nominee:
“I have an idea of a performance. Then, instead of writing about this performance i get my gouache and some paper. Then I start drawing, for example, a scene of this performance.”

New pages for first time nominees

PIPA’s team has a lot of care doing the artists’ pages. We know that it is a place where people can research about Brazilian contemporary artists.
We are trying to have pages created for all nominees of 2013 as soon as possible. The most recent created pages were for the first time nominees: Letícia Ramos, Maíra Dietrich and Marco Antonio Portela.
We also do our best to keep the pages updated, with the help of the artists, for the artists nominated in any of PIPA’s edition.

Weekend at MAM-Rio

This is the opening weekend of two exhibitions at MAM-Rio: Elizabeth Jobim’s “Blocos” [“Blocks”], curated by Luiz Camillo Osorio and “América do Sul, a Pop Arte das contradições” [“South America, the Pop Art of the contradictions”], curated by Paulo Herkenhoff and Rodrigo Alonso. Both starting this Friday.

Agenda | Summary of the week | June 21 to 27

This is the closing week of the solo exhibition “Fundo do poço” [“Rock Bottom”] with paintings and sculptures at Galeria Laura Marsiaj; and “Plaisance”, a group exhibition with Jonathas de Andrade, in Minneapolis which engages contemporary artistic practices that move in and out of ethnographic framing.

Events at Gasworks | starting on 27th

Next week (27-29 June), there will be some events happening at Gasworks.
The highlight is for the “Residencies Open Studio Weekend”, in which the current residency artists – including Marcius Galan ( 2012 PIPA’s winner) – conclude their residencies by opening their studios to the public, giving visitors a unique opportunity to meet the artists and explore the work they have produced during their time in London.

Last days | “Travessias 2”

Unusual encounter in a,favela (slum) between renowned artists and new works that dialogue in the same process of creation, with: Arjan Martins, Carlos Vergara, Cadu, Cao Guimarães, Daniel Senise, Ernesto Neto, Lucas Bambozzi, Luiza Baldan, Marcelo Silveira and Vik Muniz. Curated by Felipe Scovino and Raul Mourão.

Last days | “The Right to the City”

For The Right to the City guest curator Madelon van Schie selected works by seven artists from Latin America. The works all examine the use of urban space and life in the city in their own way. Jonathas de Andrade’s video “The Uprising” will have its premiere in this exhibition. The work is a record of a clandestine horse race through the orderly, modern city center of Recife, and the effects this race had there. The installation “Lembrança de Brasilia” by Laercio Redondo, which is comprised of a mural, printed panels and other elements, refers back specifically to the construction of Brazil’s capital.

Closing | Itaú Cultural’s Film and Video exhibition

The exhibition is divided in two steps: historic, made possible by the recovery of important productions from the 1970’s, from artists such as Nelson Leirner, Letícia Parente and Regina Silveira; and contemporary, with works by new generation artists, such as Eder Santos, Brígida Baltar, Gisela Motta & Leandro Lima, and Sara Ramo.
