(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
The Galeria Laura Marsiaj opens on Tuesday the 29th the solo show “Mind the Gap”, by artist Cristian Silva-Avária, his second solo exhibition in Rio.
Cristian Silva-Avária, who participated in the 2013 Venice Biennale in a collaboration with German artist and filmmaker Karum Farocki, and who has been nominated for PIPA 2014, works mostly with photography and video about urban residual elements that define time, space and places in several cities. The idea for this fortuitous encounter, the process of wandering, and image editing in series, collections and constellations is part of the artist’s research and creation processes, on the secondary effects of urban matter production in contemporaneity and the unstable, transitory sceneries that result from it.
In “Mind the Gap”, Silva-Avária presents a great quantity of images created in various formats and medias, such as video installations of two and three channels, lightbox photographs, diasec (acrylic glass print), c-prints (chromogenic colour print), etc. The exhibition axis is based on the artist’s fortuitous encounters with the enigmatic, the familiar and unfamiliar, from wandering in different European and Latin American cities.
The exhibition title, taken from the popular London tube warning, is precisely the concept relating all images in one great unit. “Mind the Gap” is an exhibition that puts various images together, with the aim of documenting, archiving and comparing the contemporary societies limits, to which Michel Foucault called “heterotopias” and “heterochromias”.
