The Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo (MAM-SP) holds the photography show “Poder provisório” (Temporary power), with 86 museum collection pieces, in the Paulo Figueiredo room.
Curated by photographer Eder Chiodetto, “Poder provisório” aims at discussing the instance of power in different social life spheres, through documental images and conceptual artworks, mostly of a political nature, which use photography as medium.
The show consists of works made over the course of the last fifty years, and intends to provoke a reflection on the power spheres opposed to the historical social problems in Brazil. This includes registers such as an extensive photography series from the 1970s to the 1990s, by Orlando Brito, that depict the former president Lula da Silva’s ascent, then a metallurgy worker, the former president João Figueiredo, the Araguaia guerilla and the voting for the Direct Elections Now.
In order to see the exhibition, visitors must walk through a portal and are invited to zigzag through the photographs, in a different architecture from that of the room’s original conception, “reforcing the idea of convulsion and entropy that emerges from the pieces and manifests itself in the exhibition space”, says the curator. From the portal, the cycle begins and ends with two images of the Setember 11 Attacks, by Alcir da Silva.
The artists selected by Eder Chiodetto are: Alcir Navarro da Silva, André Cypriano, Anna Bella Geiger, Antonio Manuel, Arthur Omar, Bené Fonteles, Boris Kossoy, Caio Reisewitz, Carlos Freire, Claudia Andujar, Claudio Edinger, Cris Bierrenbach, Ed Viggiani, Edouard Fraipont, Fernando Lemos, Flávio Damm, Gastão de Magalhães, Iran do Espírito Santo, João Urban, Lenora de Barros, Luis Esteves, Luiz Braga, Marcelo Buainain, Marcelo Zocchio, Mario N.
