(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
The Anita Schwartz Galeria de Arte holds since the 15th May the exhibition “Matriz e Desconstrução” [“Matrix and Deconstruction”], which occupies the whole expository space.
Curated by art critic Luisa Duarte, the show gathers works of artists Adriano Costa, Ana Holck, Angelo Venosa, Carla Guagliardi, Daisy Xavier, Érika Verzutti, Gustavo Speridião, Iran do Espírito Santo, José Bento, Luiz Zerbini, Matheus Rocha Pitta, Nuno Ramos, Waltercio Caldas e Wagner Morales.
The exhibition curatorship weaves dialogues between the works whose contruction matrix is clear, that is, the artworks have a dry, refined visuability, of a geometric nature, and in others a narrative surfaces, signaling a conversation between poles that are not opposite, but diverse and that constitute the same Brazilian history of art of the past fifty years. With artists from different generations and works that vary ,from one by Waltercio Caldas dating 1967 – sort of a sculptural drawing on the wall that announces fundamental procedures that will coordinate artistic processes – to others from 2013 or 2014.
Without a specific concept as starting point, the curator organised the show’s idea after visiting the artists studios, based on their artworks and on talks with them. “In a time where the concept, the explanation for an artwork or an exhibition seems to always come first, a chance for the public to interact with art that has an element of surprise, awe, change”, says Luisa, who adds that it is important to bring back Jean-Luc Godard’s (Paris, 1930) sentence: “culture is the rule, art is the exception” (from the film “Je vous salue, Saravejo”, 1993).
Luisa Duarte emphasizes that the critic needs to be careful to preserve the contemporary world symptoms in art, but also be able to step back to “listen” and “see” artworks themselves.
The curator also aims at working with the exhibition lighting to reinforce the concep of light x dark, clean x noise. “There are more rational artworks and others that show life’s brutality”, she comments.
