(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
The Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM-Rio) is holding the exhibition Prêmio Aquisições Marcantonio Vilaça Funarte 2013 [Marcantonio Vilaça Funarte 2013 Aquisitions Prize], featuring artworks by artists Carlos Belivacqua, Eduardo Coimbra, Ernesto Neto, Guilherme Dable, Fábio Baroli, Jimson Vilela, João Modé and Luiza Baldan.
Since its foundation MAM-Rio has been remarked for its commitment in acquiring, preserving and displaying contemporary art production. In the past years, through the Marcantonio Vilaça Funarte Prize we have been able to run for and acquire pieces by artists who are fundamental in recent Brazilian art. The idea of including a set of artists and their works to run for the Prize points out the establishment of an acquisition policy through the prize. In regards to the 2013 edition, now on view at the Museum, two important aspects stand out:
1. Comprehending the trajectory of artists important to recent Brazilian art history. In this aspect the Museum aims to fill in the blanks and obtain works that are not part of the collection yet – either in the Museum’s actual collection or in Gilberto Chateaubriand’s or Joaquim Paiva’s.
2. Adding contemporary artists to the collection that are relevantly present in the art circuit. Since its foundation, MAM-Rio has been an instituition open to experimentation and to young artist production, hence our concern in maintaining his line of acquistion.
Obtaining pieces by Ernesto Neto, Carlos Bevilacqua, Eduardo Coimbra, João Modé, Luiza Baldan, Guilherme Dable, Jimson Vilela and Fábio Baroli fill the requirements above, bringing to the museum two distinct generations with a special set of works, thus qualifying the Museum collection.
