(São Paulo, Brazil)
After fifteen years without exhibiting in Brazil, one of the finest Argentinian painters, Guillermo Kuitca returned in grand style this year. After a group show at Casa Daros, in Rio, and a retrospective exhibition at the Pinacoteca in São Paulo, two galleries joined in the effort of representing the artist in the Brazilian circuit. In collaboration, Galeria Fortes Vilaça and Mendes Wood DM present two parallel shows, “Diários” and “Doble Eclipse”, respectively, in their headquarters.
About “Doble Eclipse”:
At Mendes Wood DM, the artist presents a series of small scale paintings over wood and a large canvas. They are works that reaffirm the artist’s imagery vocabulary, his appreciation for geometric patterns, cartographic references, grim landscapes and architectural spaces. The work that gives name to the show depicts a scene where a miniature sun rests close to the horizon, covered by two stars. A pile of beds and chairs – psychoactive elements recurring in Kuitca’s oeuvre – are illuminated by the dim light of the sun and thus gain architectural proportions by reminiscing of an urban landscape.
About “Diários” [“Journals”]:
Fortes Vilaça on the other hand, presents an installation comprising 18 circular paintings from series “Diários”, started in 1994. Different groups from this body of work have already been shown – among them an installation at the 2007 Venice Biennale – but here the set consists of works made between 2005 and 2012. The artist stretches an unfinished canvas over a tabletop and keeps it there for months while carrying on with his everyday activities. Over this canvas, Kuitca makes notes, scribbles while speaking on the phone, paints studies and drafts. Intentionality and chance merge and are absorbed by each of these diaries, in a way that they expand themselves beyond painting and incorporate drawing, writing and assemblage. They are witnesses of the artist’s life and, hanging side by side, form a plastic narrative of his intimacy.
