(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
As from 2005, under a free lease agreement, MAM Rio houses the Joaquim Paiva Collection, which currently has 1,963 works by Brazilian and foreign photographers, put together starting in the 1980s. This important collection gathers different forms of artistic expression, from traditional photography to portraiture, photojournalism and contemporary documentary photography, or the relationships of photography and visual arts.
Although it started as a private collection, Paiva’s initiative is consistently public and puts to the test what used to be a private collection or individual creation. “Limiares (Thresholds) – the Joaquim Paiva Collection at MAM-Rio” talks about the different representations of public and private in the world of art by proposing another way to look at the nature of the spaces represented in the materiality of the image, with special regard to photography.
Part of the collection shown here does not exhaust or will exhaust its multiple readings. Other works in MAM-Rio’s collection, not only photographs, challenged this cut-off by seeking to permeate it, which due to taxonomy remains separate: video with painting, fickle works and those meant to last, document with art.
Spaces at home, on the street, on the beach or in a shelter coexist with transitory places, with the informality of the public space and social coping. The space for intimacy and the new relationships created between the object and subject photographed characterize much of the contemporary photographic production. There are traces of subjectivity in the materiality of a photograph that becomes the sharing-ground of anguish, personal ruptures and self-assertion with particular relevance for everyday lives and personal narratives/fictions.
