(Madrid, Spain)
Matadero Madrid holds since the 14th November the group show “Si no todas las armas, los cañones”, on view through 31st December. Featuring Matheus Rocha Pitta, the exhibition presents the investigative and creative works carried out through six weeks by nine artists, residence participants of the El Ranchito programme.
The open announcement selected artists are Tainá Azeredo, Raúl Díaz Reyes, Natalia Domínguez, Frederico Filippi, Ana Belén López, Marta Muñoz, Pablo Santacana, Carlos Nunes and Matheus Rocha Pitta. What all their projects have in common is the process and embodiment of an idea that transforms itself, lose information along the way but maintains the essence of the original plan.
The residency programme aims at bringing together the Brazilian and Spanish art communities through an exchange between the Matadero and Pivô, in São Paulo. In this edition, both institutions sought projects that reflect about art and urbanism, from a multi-disciplined perspective.
With the work “No hay pan”, Matheus Rocha Pitta points out the exchange mechanisms regulating our everyday lives. Instead of referring to money, Pitta uses a common element, like bread, and analyses it from a historical point of view, using etymology, popular tales and legends. Each day, the artist baked a bread filled with sand and offered it to someone to share. There are three series of photographs illustrating the experience.
