Amilcar de Castro

The exhibition presents a summary of Amilcar de Castro’s oeuvre, divided into four clusters: Outdoors sculptures – monumental sculptures in the Museum’s gardens; Sculpture and method – different size sculptures occupy the internal area; Drawings – large scale artworks on canvas and smaller scale ones on paper; and Graphic design – as a graphic designer, Amilcar had a revolutionary role, taking part as main author in the graphic reform of a Rio de Janeiro newspaper.

The multi-artistic collective leaves its virtual platform to display brand new works in an exhibition which is an artwork in itself, reinstating its polyphonic, multimedia, collaborative aspects, in an expanded, contemporary artistic action.

In 2005, under a free lease, the Museum started holding the Joaquim Paiva Collection, currently with nearly two thousand works by Brazilian and foreign photographers, purchased since the 1980s.
Operação Condor – João Pina

It was after photographing former Portuguese convicts that João Pina met and researched about Operação Condor, a secret plan that “brothered” six latin-american countries during Cold War. His lens worked as an eye, observing the effects this long dictatorship period had in our society, some survivors and family members. We are facing our own history. We can only wonder what kind of justice we want.

The history of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro is marked by social tensions and by struggles for rights and citizenship. Our democratization faces a slavery, patriarchal past that remains unshaken. The artists place themselves inside this struggle, wanting to reset ways of seeing and transforming reality, sympathizing with the excluded and with the resistance of any forms of oppression.

Cinematheque
Chaplin sem Carlitos [Chaplin without Carlitos]
In January, MAM’s Cinematheque holds an exhibition with feature films by Charles Chaplin without the character that immortalized him – Carlitos. This retrospective brings all of Chaplin’s sound films and a silent movie, that is the first drama of his career, in which he preferred not to act.

Movement is given through the alternation of static images and objects.Filmed in Jardim Canadá, a rural town which has been radically industrialized in the last decade by the mining industry. “Part 2” by Vijai Patchineelam, Brazil, 2014, HD video, 15´. Following the movement of a pack of street dogs at an eye level exploration of the landfills of Jardim Canadá.

First drama of Chaplin’s career, who preferred not to act in this film. A man falls in love with a courtesan.

Movie that inspired Kill Bill, by Quentin Tarantino, based on Kazuo Koike’s manga. Woman is raped and beaten up by a group of thieves, who murdered her husband and son.
