8 Brazilian artists perform live at exhibition dedicated to the work of Marina Abramovic

(São Paulo, Brazil)

SESC Pompeia is holding from tomorrow until May the show “Terra Comunal – Marina Abramović + MAI” [“Common Ground – Marina Abramovic + MAI”], dedicated to the works by Marina Abramović and the three main elements presented in her practices. Abramovic invited 8 Brazilian names to join the show. Ayrson Heráclito, Maurício Ianês and the collective Grupo EmpreZa are among them.

The project is divided in two clusters: “Terra Comunal – Marina Abramovic”, with works by the artist, and “Terra Comunal – MAI”, presenting the proposal of Marina Abramovic Institute for an open public for the first time in the world. The first part is composed by three installations based of recent works by Abramovic: “The House with the Ocean View”, “The Artist is Present” and the brand new “512 Hours”. This section is curated by Jochen Volz, assisted by Catarina Duncan, and presents videos of historical performances by the artist and the “Transitory Objects for Human Use”, series created after a research of minerals and gemstones and their influences over the human body.

The second part of the project, “Terra Comunal – MAI”, presents the greater experience of the proposals by Marina Abramovic Insitute in the world. The public will meet and take part in the Abramovic method, practicing immersive activities during a period of two hours. Marina Abramovic affirms that: “We live in a world of constant distractions. The Abramovic Method exercises permit that people try out the time of being with themselves, the quietness and the absence of needs. This enables the participant to absorb and appreciate the long-term performances”.
In this section, there is also a space dedicated to the development of the research about performances and immaterial art, entitled “Space In Between”, where talks and activities with artists and other professionals will be set.

The performer and curators Paula Garcia and Lynsey Peisinger selected eight Brazilian names that will perform live during the event. Before the opening of the exhibition, Abramovic and Peisinger conducted a workshop for these artists, so they could be able to confront the difficulties that they will find along the two months of the show. The artists must be in line with the Abramovic Method and in the appropriate state of mind to perform their works. Ayrson Heráclito, Grupo EmpreZa and Maurício Ianês are among the selected artists.

Ayrson Heráclito presents “Transmutação da Carne” [Transmutation of The Meat]:

The collective Grupo EmpreZa performs “Vesúvio” [Vesuvius], desmistificando atitudes e tensionando os limites do espaço a partir da pressão experimental:

Maurício Ianês presents “O Vínculo” [The Bond]:
