Frieze New York 2016 | See the art fair’s hightlights

(New York, USA)

The fifth edition of the Frieze Art Fair in New York opens to the public on May 5th, showcasing the world’s leading galleries, innovative curated sections, a celebrated series of talks, site-specific artist commissions and the city’s most talked about restaurants, all in a bespoke structure overlooking the East River in Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan. Frieze New York takes a similar approach to Frieze London, one of the world’s most influential contemporary art fairs.

The fair offers the opportunity to encounter an exceptional quality and range of artwork, featuring the world’s most exciting emerging talents together with iconic names in modern and contemporary art. Independent curators have specially advised on sections Focus, Frame and Spotlight to encourage discovery and connoisseurship.

Following its acclaimed debut in 2015, the 2016 edition of Frieze New York will feature Spotlight, a section for solo artist presentations of work made in the 20th century, with a special focus on work made after 1960. Organized by Clara M Kim, two Brazilian artists takes part on this section: Abraham Palatnik at Nara Roesler Gallery (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro) and Felipe Ehrenberg at Baró Gallery (São Paulo).

Frame is a section dedicated to galleries established less than eight years ago. Galleries are selected on the basis of a proposed solo presentation. Frame allows visitors and collectors to see work by artists who have not previously benefitted from an international platform to show their work.

Galleries included in Focus are selected on the basis of a proposed solo stand or curated project, specifically conceived for the fair. The galleries taking part in Focus will have opened in or after 2004 and debut works not previously seen within an art fair context.

Stand Prize
The Stand Prize recognises an outstanding gallery presentation at Frieze New York, and is supported by Champagne Pommery. In 2015 the Brazilian gallery, Jaqueline Martins in São Paulo was the winner of the Stand Prize 2015, judged the most innovative stand at the fair. The prize of $15,000 was judged by an international panel of curators: Carlos Basualdo (the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art), Hamza Walker (Co-Curator, ‘Made in L.A. 2016’) and Ruba Katrib(Curator, SculptureCenter).

Frieze Projects
