After ‘The voice/way of things’ in 2013, MdM Gallery presents, from 10th May to 9th July, ‘Com a pele fina’, the second solo exhibition by Maria Laet in France. The videos, prints, photographs and drawings ‘Com a pele fina’ – With thin skin, in English – reflects Maria Laet’s pursuit and deep research about the materialization of limits. The artist continues to define visual membranes of various kinds which serves as meeting points between the outside world and the human inner life. In the videos ‘Tuba (II)’ and ‘Tuba (III)’ (2015), a plastic film is placed at the bell of a sousaphone whilst being played by a musician, allowing for the vibration of the musician’s breath to become visible. Conversely, in ‘Sopro (2008)’, it is the breath of the artist that emerges in the ink of white sheets.

The photo ‘Terra’ (2015) captures a subtle intervention with the help of another natural element: inside the Park Lage in Rio de Janeiro, the artist sew for over a week a thread connecting two trees by the soil, following the subtle traces of their roots. Maria Laet employs in that way an archaeology of feelings through the traces left behind by her works and by the own gestures that makes them, traces and gestures that are fragile but at the same time present and persistent, as in the textual repetition of ‘Vai Passar’ (2016), a piece in which she writes the sentence “this will pass” on each of the pages of a notebook until it becomes a powerful manta by the axis of repetition

Born in 1982, Maria Laet lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. Graduated from Camberwell College of Art, she participated in the residency programme Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa, in Lisbon, and Schloss Balmoral, Bad Ems in Germany. She was once again nominated for PIPA Prize in 2016, following her nominations in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Her work was exhibited at the Biennale of Sydney in 2012. Her works can be found at the Coleção Gilberto Chateaubriand, Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Niterói, Brazil, FRAC Lorraine and the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium.
