(New York, USA)
Opened this week Ana Mazzei‘s exhibition “Ghost Studies” at Almine Rech Gallery. Nominated for PIPA Prize for the third time this year, Mazzei presents new paintings on linen that are both appealing and crude because of its violent application of color on the delicate fabric. She is also showing sculptures that play with dimensions and the perception of the minuscule and the gigantic.
The “ghostly” presence on the work is the viewer, who is never incidental, but a frequent thought during the paintings’ conception. This spectator is used by Mazzei as a way to materialize her thoughts about space and its relationship to the artwork. Many of the artist’s works deal with objects that simply locate herself and the viewer in the world, the architecture, and the spaces around us.
