“Sobreexposición” discusses the role of the image in contemporary age

(Montevideo, Uruguay)

The group show “Sobreexposición”, currently on view at the Espacio de Arte Contemporaneo, features works in photography and video by national and international artists, including PIPA Prize 2015 nominee Felipe Cama.

Without the intention of developing, through this project, a moralizing thesis, and without a factual conclusion, the exhibition intends to propose a dialogue that can be critical, satirical, creative and profound based on works which reflect upon the excess of self-portraits and portraits in contemporary age. “What do we intend to discuss with our image?”, “how do we shape it?”, “how do we communicate through it ?” are a few of the questions which ponder in the exhibition – or, as the artist and theorist Joan Fontcuberta states, “the circulation prevails over the content of the image in the post-photography era”, photographs no longer referring to anything else besides themselves. With the over exposure of our faces, have we downgraded self-portrait to an image of less relevance?

“Sobreexposición” group show with Ignasi Aballí, Albano Afonso, Iván Argote, Elina Brotherus, Catalina Bunge, Felipe Cama, Javier Chorbadjian, Luciana Damiani, Josechu Dávila, César Escudero Andaluz, Andrés Galeano, Jason Pfeifer, Nicolás Rupcich, Alain Urrutia, Jessie Young
