The question of what is panting guides “Painting or not”

(Henningsvær, Norway)

What constitutes a painting? Most importantly, what does not? Today, no single authority or artist is able to answer such a question. In hope to discuss the matter, the KaviarFactory put together “Painting or not”, on view at the space until January 1st next year.

The exhibition features 39 artists from across the world – the two Brazilian representatives, Beto Shwafaty and Paulo Nimer Pjota, have been PIPA Prize nominees – all of whom, having started their careers in the 1960s at earliest, have benefitted from the spirit of experimentation that took place in the 20th and 21st century, as well as from the technical expertise developed by painters since the 14th century.

The works showcased have been chosen precisely due to their abilities to question – and subvert – what is usually conceived as a painting. What if the artist painted onto a pair of shoes, or a book? What if the work features paint on it, but it was not applied by the artist? What if the piece looks like a painting, mas its constituting material is instead lacquer or wax? Are those paintings? Are those artists painters? “Painting or not” doesn’t offer any definite answers or conclusions, rather positioning itself as a place for contemplation and discussion. See some of the works on view:
