Next Monday, February 19th, PIPA Prize starts to publish the list of artists nominated for PIPA Prize 2018. Founded in 2010, the Prize is one of the most important contemporary art awards in the country, representing a comprehensive “window into the Brazilian contemporary art”. It does so not only by offering monetary donations to the winners of its three categories (PIPA, PIPA Popular Vote and PIPA Online), but also by maintaining an extensive bilingual database with information and artwork images of all the artists nominated for the Prize throughout the last eight years – a number that now sums up to 335 artists. PIPA also updates daily a cultural calendar promoting exhibitions by former and current artist nominees’ in Brazil and around the world, and invites the nominated artists to record exclusive interviews in every edition.
The 78 artists nominated this year – 39 for the first time – have been selected by a Nominating Committee composed of 28 professionals from Brazil and abroad specialized in Brazilian contemporary art. All their names will be announced from Monday, February 19th, through Friday, February 23rd, in three daily bulletins, always published at 10 am, 2 pm and 6 pm.
After being nominated, the artists who wish to take part in the ninth edition of the Prize shall send the material solicited by the coordination of the Prize within the established deadlines in order to run for the following categories:
- PIPA – Elected by the Award Jury amongst the four finalists of the edition, the winner of the most important category of the Prize receives a total donation of R$130,000. Part of this amount is used to fund a three-month artistic residency at Residency United, New York.
- PIPA Popular Vote – The winner is chosen by the visitors of the PIPA Prize Finalists’ Exhibition at MAM-Rio and receives a donation of R$24,000. This year, the group show happens from September 1st until October 29th.
- PIPA Online – Split into two rounds between the months of July and August this year, the category awards the 1st and 2nd most voted artists by the visitors of the PIPA websites with R$10,000 and R$5,000 donations, respectively.
