Exhibition view of “Natura Naturans“, 2018, Mendes Wood DM, New York, US Mendes Wood DM

“Natura Naturans” features 12 artists

(New York, USA)

On view at Mendes Wood DMNatura Naturans” explores the dynamic relationship between nature and creative agency. With a diverse group of artists, the show, open since last June 26th, investigates nature beyond a fixed subject or finite object, but also as a sort of collaborator. It does showcase nature as the creative force that is, continuously self-generating, evolving and growing.

As the title and point of departure for the exhibition, the artists explored the philosopher Spinoza’s concept of nature, that which nurtures or generates itself. The show explores the notion of a natural system as a continuously growing ecosystem, where humans are not within or without, but rather woven into the same ecological fabric, constantly affecting its growth as it constantly affects ours.

The show features works by Lucas Arruda, Paloma Bosquê, Adriano Costa, Sonia Gomes, Felipe Meres and Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, among others. The exhibition seeks to illustrate this infinite, limitless creative force that becomes akin to collaboration, as opposed to adoption or appropriation.
