Jonathas de Andrade presents video installation at BoCa

(Braga, Portugal)

The second edition of BoCa -Biennial of Contemporary Arts- returns to Lisbon, Porto and Braga, with the participation of artists like Angélica Liddell, Marlene Monteiro Freitas, Pedro Barateiro, Meg Stuart and PIPA 2011 finalist and 2010 nominee Jonathas de Andrade. As John Romão, the edition´s artistic director says:  “BoCa finds itself “out of place”, as “extradisciplinary” daring us to change positions, following the transgressive shifts of the artists.”

Maceió born artist Jonathas de Andrade is presenting his installation “O Peixe” [The Fish], he uses photography, installation and video to mix fiction with reality. His work discuss failing utopias, ideals and world projects, especially in the Latin-American context. “In the film “O Peixe” [The Fish] a fishing village stages a kind of ritual: they cradle the fish in their arms until their timely deaths. A limiting embrace – a rite of passage – where man retakes his condition as species and face to face with his prey, calms it down through an ambiguous sequence of gestures: affection, solidarity and violence.”
