For the first time, the artist Thiago Rocha Pitta, PIPA 2012 finalist, and designer Hugo França will show their works together, in “Tropical Molecule”, at Boesky West, in Aspen, Colorado. Even though França and Pitta differ in their conceptual and aesthetic approaches, they share a commitment to engaging with and honouring the natural environment, especially when it comes to talking about Brazil, their home country.
From February 15th to March 31st 2019, the exhibition will include a selection of Pitta’s watercolours, frescos, photographs, and a new sculpture installed on the exterior of the gallery, and França’s sculptural furniture. Together, the works continuously highlight the blurring boundaries between art and design and call to nature as a powerful source of inspiration.
In Pitta’s photograph and video installations, he trains the viewer’s eyes on almost imperceptible Earth alterations, such as the erosion of terrain, to the descent of fog, to the fluctuation of underwater formations. He aims to capture the ever-changing environment and he is deeply engaged with the origins of life, tracing the role of microorganisms lie cyanobacteria and stromatolites to photosynthesis. In his watercolours and frescos, vivid greens and shades of blue coalesce to suggest both brilliant bursts of energy and moments of soothing calm. This way, Pitta’s recent works seem to encapsulate his vision for the creation of Earth itself.
