With new works, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané presents his first major solo show in the UK, at Nottingham Contemporary, “The Word for World is Forest”. Through the use of technology, immersive installation, architectural interventions, a 16mm film and a virtual reality work, the artist values the representation of Mata Atlântica, a Brazilian tropical biome.
Considering that only 7% of the rainforest original surface is left, Mangrané tries to portray the urgency of rethinking nature. For that, he simulates the flora from Mata Atlântica with thirty-five hand-blown glass branches, hung at different heights. Each branch is filled with various species of epiphytes, or air plants, which anchor themselves to trees but source moisture and nutrients from the air.
Besides the intervention, he presents the film in which he correlates mechanically and conceptually the rainforest and the movie. Phantom, the immersive experience through the virtual-reality headset, enables the visitor to experience the rainforest.
