Jonathas de Andrade grapples with the promises, failures, and inequities in Brazil’s Nordeste

(Chicago, USA)

Presented at the Bergman Family Gallery on the second floor of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, is Jonathas de Andrade’s (PIPA 2011 finalist) latest debut. Curated by José Esparza Chong Cuy, former Pamela Alper Associate Curator, with Nina Wexelblatt, Curatorial Assistant, the showing features three new works.

At once intimate and historical, the work of De Andrade evokes love, memory and place. His videos, installations and photographs often respond to the geography and culture surrounding the city of Recife, northeast of Brazil, where the artist lives and works. Jogos Dirigidos (Directed Games) is one of the works shown. It is a film commissioned by the MCA that presents a playful exchange between members of the deaf community fun the northeast of Brazil.
