Laura Belém’s first permanent public artwork, “Das […] Element”, was inaugurated this year

(Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany)

The artist Laura Belém, PIPA Prize 2018 nominee, inaugurated her first permanent public artwork this year in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, on July 9th. “Das […] Element” was commissioned by the “Art Residency Wildbad” program. The invitation to develop this site-specific work is part of a broader project of the Wildbad Rothenburg institution that, throughout 10 years, will commission contemporary international artists to create specific public and permanent artworks for the Wildbad park.

The piece that Laura put together over a three months period is a polyphonic sound installation with a multi-track soundtrack that revolves around the topic of water. The artwork also involves a readymade object and features a poem by Nora Gomringer, specially written and recorded for this project, and is freely inspired by the story of Wildbad Rothenburg, which was, in the past, a famous spot due to it’s thermal and healing waters. Those later on ceased to exist because the thermal fountains were extinct. Laura’s piece, installed permanently inside a small cave at the park, dialogues with the external landscape and with it’s surroundings, but also builds connections with an internal landscape, where nature, memory, place, poetry and imagination intertwine and answer one another.

The thematic of water works as a starting point to explore psychological and emotional deeper states, connected to concepts of memory, time, orality and movement.
