Artists’ books by Maria Laet, Rosângela Rennó and Sandra Cinto at “Cut-Out”, in New York

(New York, NY)

LMAKgallery, in New York, is holding the group show Cut-Out, with works by twelve artists, including Maria Laet, Rosângela Rennó and Sandra Cinto. There will be six distinctive and special artists’ books on view from November 15th until December 22th.

The exhibition is curated in collaboration with Maria Lagos, and was developed, as explained by the press release, with the idea to present contemporary artists’ books that reference one from a previous decade, from the 50s until 00s, based on their concept. A dialogue between the new books and their reference was created by the curators: for instance, Henri Matisse’s Jazz Book was paired with the book Partitura (Ikrek, 2014) by Sandra Cinto; The Valise (MoMA, 2017) a book project with Johanna Calle, Matías Duville, Maria Laet, Mateo López, Nicolás Paris, Rosângela Rennó and Christian Vinck Henriquez, has been paired with Sophie Calle’s Suite Venitienne (80s).

For Sandra Cinto’s book, “Partitura”, the artist created a fantastical music score intertwined with her landscape drawings, resulting in an experience of melodious movements, as described by the group show’s text. Another book, “The Valise”, was made by seven artists, including Maria Laet and Rosângela Rennó, and brings seven different interpretations of the concept of an adventurous journey. The art piece was inspired by the Argentine writer César Aria’s story “Un episode en la vida del pintor viajero”.
