“Mata” is a Portuguese homonym meaning both forest and kill. In Australia, Gê Orthof unites both Brazilian and Australian contexts regarding issues of environmental degradation and political inaction that is epidemic in both countries. “Mata! Mata” can be visited from November 8th until December 21, at Canberra Contemporary Art Space at Gorman Arts Centre.
With installation, performance, drawings, video and photography, Gê references the children of the forest and Brazil’s LGBTQIA+ community – and counts the deaths – reflecting his personal experience and introducing ideas around freedom, understanding and acceptance.
