Galeria Jaqueline Martins presents ‘Giro’, by Maria Noujaim

Video Program, conceived by Galeria Jaqueline Martins in collaboration with curator Mirtes Marins de Oliveira, aims to present different works in a dialogical relationship, highlighting similarities that might serve to reflect on contemporary life. For the seventh edition, they present Maria Noujaim, with the video documentation of her work ‘Giro’ (2018) articulated to the dome-plan drawing of the Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza Church (1660) by Francesco Borromini (1599-1667).

Maria Noujaim works on constructions that combine body and architecture, presence, and space, creating gestural poems charged with intimate silences as an important part of her language. She suggested this dialogue between the video documentation of her Giro performance and the plans for the dome of Francesco Borromini’s Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza Church, an example of baroque production in the Roman region, which saw the architect adapt a preexisting building and develop his proposal of spatial organization using geometric shapes reminiscent of the Star of David.

According to Noujaim, what she wants is to create dialogue – not among artworks, but among records in the form of drawings, virtual constructs of the actual experience, indicating the leap that these works take, in due proportion, from the lines of a two-dimensional plane to a curvature of space, an operation which enables the conveying of a new layer of meaning to viewers. Her work is characterized by an interest in the cross-referencing of historical periods, the tradition of the histories of art and architecture, and the contemporary condition, with thickness achieved as a result.
