“Dormentes”: Lucas Simões’ solo show at Galeria Pelaires

(Mallorca, Spain)

Until February 19, 2022, the solo exhibition Dormentes, by the Brazilian artist Lucas Simões, can be visited at Galeria Pelaires, in Spain.

Check out below an excerpt from Giorgio Agamben’s text (non-oficial translation), in which the author relates Aristotle’s text to “La Dormición del Arte”, a 17th-century painting attributed to Artemisia Gentileschi that inspired the sculptures by artist Lucas Simões, showed in the exhibition:

“Those who really have power can exercise it or not. Power is essentially defined by the possibility of its non-act, by the possibility of remaining latent”.

(…) in this way, poetry does not simply mean what it says explicitly, but also represents the act of telling, the power and impotence of telling (…) “.

“Abismos”* in a state of torpor, dismounted; the “Dormentes” draw the shape of gravity, of rest, and lean imperturbably over the metal plates. Here, the concrete shows its sensuality in its soft nudity, in its colors, a skin that is asleep and at the same time vigilant.

*Series of sculptures made by the artist between 2015 and 2020.
