About PIPA Prize

PIPA Prize celebrates its 14th edition in 2023. Over the years, it kept true to its mission of promoting and supporting Brazilian contemporary art, now presenting some changes.

This year, the Prize has to achieve two goals: focusing on a more recent production and creating a stronger articulation between the Prize and PIPA Institute.

The Nominating Committee members will nominate up to three visual artists with a career trajectory no longer than 15 years (from the first solo or group show), focusing on the latest production in the artistic circuit. For their nominations, the following parameters should be considered: the distinguished production and the relevance of the Prize for better development and growth of the artist, still in an early stage of their career.

All nominated artists that formalize their participation are entitled to a page on PIPA’s website, a video interview and being included in the Prize’s bilingual catalogue.

The PIPA Prize Board will choose four artists from the nominees, amongst those who confirm their participation in PIPA Prize 2023. These four Awarded Artists will participate in a group exhibition at Paço Imperial do Rio de Janeiro. Each one will receive a donation of R$20,000.

PIPA Online 2023 continues to be optional for all participants in this edition and the online voting system remains in two rounds. Just like in the previous years, in the first round, people must vote in at least three artists. In the second round, the voter must choose only one among the artists that received more than 500 votes in the first round. Finally, PIPA Online 2023 rewards the two most voted artists, and each one will receive, at the end of the second round of voting, a donation of R$5,000. This virtual showcase, which seeks to be 100% democratic and decentralized, is specially relevant for the artists outside of the Rio-São Paulo area that are not represented by any gallery: through the voting, they find a way to mobilize people and, thus, to disseminate even more their work.

Unlike previous years, in which the winners donated a piece of work to the Institute,  the Awarded Artists will not be asked for any donations. The changes match our goal to contemplate more artists on the Prize’s trajectory, as well as to make our collection more diverse and pluralistic. We want to distribute the Institute’s resources in a broader way and to encourage other artists that have already participated in past editions by commissioning and acquiring new pieces.

ABOUT THE PRIZE AND THE PIPA INSTITUTE

PIPA Prize is an initiative of  PIPA Institute. It was created in 2010 to be the most prominent Brazilian prize in the Visual Arts. From 2010 to 2018, PIPA had a partnership with MAM-Rio, where the finalist’s exhibitions took place. Each of the four finalists of each year donated a work for the museum’s contemporary art collection. In 2019, the exhibition was held at Villa Aymoré, in Rio de Janeiro. In 2020, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the exhibition could not happen. The four finalists were announced winners. In 2021, the PIPA Institute organized an exhibition with works by the four winners of 2020, from September to November of 2021, at the Paço Imperial, in Rio de Janeiro. This year, the four Awarded Artists will have a group show again at Paço Imperial.
