“Le Petit Musée”

Ismael Monticelli´s research evolves from different languages. On one hand, we notice that his observation is built in a dialogue with photography and some of his works are presented in this media. On the other hand, we cannot deny his experimentation with multiple media, building objects and presenting installations. The relationship between image and text is crucial, but always keeping a distance from the style of illustration or the nostalgia of printed books. Words and sentences are essential in a way that they stimulate the projection of new mental images. This plea to imagination happens from the presentation of images in a silent and economic chromatic way. The black and white images blur the eye and suggest time acting as a gesture of dusted accumulation.
Monticelli’s interest in the creation of images that orbit around a specific space of home – his house or institutions – is recurrent. Domestic sights happen in the presentation of trees and fields, but also in the cracked walls of his house. This interest is empowered by the artist’s obsessive, systematic investigation of those places. More than creating images that nurture those spaces with affective eyes, the artist occupies the role of researcher operating between a cold detachment and the closeness of his own body. Images, objects and information that come from this place are presented in different ways to the viewer, who stands in front of a puzzle with no single resolution.
