It was in the early years of her education that she began to develop her first artistic projects. Maura Grimaldi works as an artist and researcher. Her interests lies into subjects like phantasmagoria; the invisible; the already obsolete photographic technologies; and devices related to the immersive experience of images contemplation (Panoramas, darkrooms, magic lantern and other optical devices.). It’s trough the investigation of those subjects that the artist tries to reflect about the many conceptions of image.

About the works: – “Morel’s invention: reading a fragment” Morel’s invention: reading a fragment was a performance that occurred within the project of exhibition Sala de Leitura (Reading Room), curated by Galciani Neves, at SESC São Carlos, Brazil. It was an action carried out by two artist readers, from the original Spanish fragment of the text Morel’s invention by Adolfo Bioy Casares, and its free translation organized by Maura Grimaldi. It took place on 09.09.07 from midday solar to the setting sun, totaling more than six hours of Work. The action articulated the relations of the body and the voice within the exhibition space and proposed the experience of duplication of the individuals through the projections of simultaneous voices. – “It’s been seven years since he’s been losing him” The three machines tell the story of the relationship between the narrator and his contact with a person in the process of loss of memory. Each equipment presents a perspective, the first announces the voice of the narrator, the second the direct voice of the one who loses the memory, while the latter presents observation notes external to the narrative, such as a footnote would do. – “- Do you think the dead come and watch the living?” The dialogue between two projectors about their condition of machine and data transmitters is synchronized from 84 slides that merge texts and a few images. To reflect on the universe of images, the text written by the artist starts from the initial question “- Do you think the dead come and watch the living?” from Alfred Hitchcock ‘s film Rebecca (1940). – “Micro Centro de Estudos em Projeções | Micro Center for Studies in Projections – MCEP” MCEP is a phantasmatic institution intended for the research, collection, collaboration and experimentation of the universe of projections. Working since 2016, the MCEP was created and is held by the artist Maura Grimaldi. – “Apparitions: Control Panel / Documents / Morel / Abadiânia” From the projection of slides, three distinct narratives are presented at Apparitions: Control Panel / Documents / Morel / Abadiânia. A control panel controls randomly this sequence. Able to programming manual or automatic slide forward and reward modes, it can also change a retrofitted light, reducing or increasing the intensity. – Untitled This work is an investigation about the relationship of copies and doubles. From a single image (the picture of a mirror that nothing seems to reflect, only its through) it was planed a series of actions to be projected. – “Ronda – Part 1” “Ronda – Part 1” is a co-authored project with Flora Leite. In this work, the nautical structure of a lighthouse was moved to the mountains in the countryside of Minas Gerais. After designed and built a portable, automatic and mobile three-dimensional piece, it was taken successive times to Selado’s Peak – border of Minas Gerais with São Paulo, Brazil. During six months the artists spent nights working/playing with the lighthouse in about 5 different expeditions. The interest in the lighthouse lies in the fact that it is something able to contemplate both universes of optical instruments with its projection apparatus (mirror, lights and lenses) as the symbolic dimension of this device used to guide ships to land safely. – “Projected-image-experiments” Developed in the ocassion of International Residency Program from JACA – Center of Art and Technology in partnership with Clóvis Salgado Foundation, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Projected-image-experiments discuss the projection mechanisms while discussing the deterioration and disappearance of the photographic images. It is composed of three distinct parts: the first it is to project the image of a mountain until it disappears, the second was to transform the apparatus of the camera on a projection device, and the third, finally, was the projector apparatus deconstruction. – “Corners” Corners includes more than 70 frames held overnight in the city of São Paulo. Result of work that has been developed since 2010, this essay was designed entirely in the medium format photographic films. All copies, size 6cm x 6cm, departing from analogical processes. A work that arises in two ways of interpretation; by one side reiterates the subject, by the other presents nuances and particularities frame by frame, whether it concerns a certain emptying and extinguishes the human figure, reveals an affective collection that is not decouples from the subjective condition. And it is precisely facing two directions where it is located a corner. The corner is the meeting of two roads that open one to another. It is also the moment from happening available to the street, where it is located the greater range of pedestrian visibility that circulates, second only to the squares and plazas.
Each projector is focused on a distinct collection of images. The first is a compilation of technical history images and the construction of the apparatus. The second it’s the artist’s personal archive that have a phantasmatic aspect. Finally, what is presented in the third narrative, it’s the documentation of a visit to one of the most important centers based in the spiritualist practice in Brazil.
Developed in the ocassion of 11th Red Bull Station Artistic Residency, International program, São Paulo, Brazil.
