Since 2018, the group Cartografia Negra has carried out Volta Negra, a walk in which records are shared about the experiences of black populations in the 18th and 19th centuries in the central region of the city of São Paulo. The work is the result of research that the group has been developing since 2017 on these memories and spaces. The collective, formed by Carolina Piai Vieira, Pedro Vinícius Alves and Raissa Albano, participated in the Convida Program of the Moreira Salles Institute, was part of the curatorial team of the 13th International Architecture Biennial of São Paulo and is exhibiting its work at the 18th International Architecture Biennial from Venice.
13th Bienal Internacional de Arquitetura de São Paulo, co-curated by Coletivo Cartografia Negra
The Coletivo Cartografia Negra appears to think, revisit, know and re-signify some black territories in São Paulo. Places of resistance or spaces that were used for sale, torture or executions of enslaved people and that today have names and meanings that erase these stories – often even contradict them.
Since 2018, we have held the Volta Negra, an open walk in which records are shared about the experiences of black populations in the 18th and 19th centuries, in the central region of the city of São Paulo, since 2018.
