PIPA Prize 2023 nominee

Juliana is a Visual Arts graduate student at EBA/UFMG (Brazil). Her artistic trajectory transits between different mediums and spaces but always with painting as her main focus. She investigates the expressive characteristics of the human figure, exploring  proximities of portrait making as a way of accessing matters of identity and race, mixing her own story with the individual and collective subjectivities and memories of the portrayed person. Her practice uses compositional elements such as objects, accessories, colors, prints and the interactions that inscribe the body in space. Her paintings discusses the relationship between Belo Horizonte’s youth and their daily lives, relationships, choices, conflicts, affections, friendships, dreams and, above all, their interaction with the cultural circuit of the places they live.

Her solo exhibitions include: “Estar Íntimo” (Galeria de Arte e Pesquisa GAL, 2023, Belo Horizonte, Brazil), “Dialética – Corpo, História e Som” ( São Paulo Cultural Centre – CCSP, 2023, São Paulo, Brazil), “Julianismo” ( Sesiminas Cultural Centre Gallery, 2022, Belo Horizonte, Brazil), “Corpo História” open air installation ( Virada Cultural BH, 2022, Brazil), “Entre – Lugares Julianismo” (Art no centro – Ocupação Artística Teatro Espanca, 2022, Belo Horizonte, Brazil ). Juliana has also participated in group exhibitions such as “Dengos do Cotidiano” (2022, Belo Horizonte, Brazil), “Pertencer e Mudar” (Museu da República, 2022, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), 2nd Casa Camelo Contemporary Art Festival  (2021, Belo Horizonte, Brazil ), “NOIZ” (2020, Espaço Cultural OCA Livre – Belo Horizonte, Brazil). She was selected for the BDMG Lab Cultural residency (2021, Belo Horizonte, Brazil). Her works have also been sold at the ArtRio art fair  in 2021.
