“In a deservedly famous text, Vilém Flusser said that there are those interested in fog, where it is barely possible to distinguish one thing from another, and those eager to clear away the fog and display the differences that distinguish things. But whichever stance is adopted, there is no denying that everything is foggy, these are our spiritual surroundings, and nobody is out of the haze. Memory, Eros, death, traditions, families and diaries are pure fog. Kisses? Mist. The poetry and artwork of Leila Danziger battle against the fog, knowing that the struggle is utterly in vain. Organizing death in rubber stamps, diaries, figures, meters? Life as well? Why? Guimarães Rosa would say: to summon negativity.” Carlito Azevedo, O Globo, 27/12/ 2014

Artist, poet and researcher Leila Danziger lectures at the Institute of Arts, Rio de Janeiro State University.
One of the vectors of her work is investigating the printed page (newspapers, books and historical documents), guided by the friction between micro and macro history, between family recollections and the constructs of memories of extreme violence. Her work ranges through an assortment of media, including printing and wipeout techniques, photographs, videos, installations and writing.
Notable among her main projects are the Public Diaries (Diários públicos), an ongoing series prepared through selective wipeouts of newsheets and Emigrant Ship (Navio de emigrantes), a tribute to Lasar Segall that links outflows of refugees fleeing World War II and its aftermath to today’s immigration crisis.
Recent one-woman shows include: Emigrant Ship (Navio de emigrantes) at the Caixa Cultural Centers in Brasília (2018) and São Paulo (2019); South of the Future (Ao sul do futuro) at the Lasar Segall Museum in São Paulo (2018); What Vanishes, What Resists (O que desaparece, o que resiste) at the Art Foundation (Funarte) Center in Belo Horizonte (2014); Happiness-in-Abyss (Felicidade-em- abismo) in the Visual Arts School Chapel, Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro (2012) and What Vanishes, What Resists at the MFA Bezalel Gallery in Tel Aviv, Israel (2011).
Noteworthy among recent group shows are: Women at Sea (Mulheres no Mar) at the Rio Museum of Art, Rio de Janeiro (2018); Hiatus: Heritage of Dictatorship Violence in Latin America (Hiatus: a memória da violência ditatorial na América Latina) at the Resistance Memorial, São Paulo (2017); Unik Books (Livres Uniks) at Topographie de l’Art, Paris (2017); Heritage of Books (Mémoire des livres) at Galerie Dix9, Paris (2016); Imagetext (Imagetexte) at Topographie de l’Art, Paris (2016); Wings to Roots (Asas a raízes) at the Caixa Cultural Center, Rio de Janeiro (2015); and There are Schools that are Cages and There are Schools That are Wings (Há escolas que são gaiolas e há escolas que são asas) at the Rio Museum Of Art, Rio de Janeiro (2014).
She has authored three books of poetry through the 7Letras publishing house in Rio de Janeiro: Three Speech Essays (Três ensaios de fala, 2012); New Year (Ano novo – 2016); and Baghdad is Far [photograms](C’est loin Bagdad [fotogramas] – 2018), as well as two books on her artistic output: Public Diaries (Diários públicos) through the Editora Contra Capa publishing house in 2013; and All the Names of Melancholy (Todos os nomes da melancolia) through the Editora Apicuri publishing house in 2012.
