PIPA Prize 2024 nominee

Mari Nagem is a multidisciplinary artist conceptually driven by the perception of digital culture and its relation to nature. Navigating various media, using luminous colors and sharpened edges, she creates works that enlighten our perception of critical aspects of the information age, such as the artificiality of landscapes, data subjectivity, and the capitalist race for happiness. With wit, and combining appealing titles, she raises existential questions while trying to bring sensibility to our relationship with and through machines.

In the last year, Nagem was awarded an honorable mention at SFER IK Museion (MX), an artist fellowship to work with the Department of Modern Biology in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (NY), the Mostra3M Art Prize (BR), and the NYFA Immigrant Artist Program fellowship. In 2022, she was awarded the Marcantonio Vilaça Prize, the Ox-Bow Program Fellowship (US), and the Temporada de Projetos do Paço das Artes (BR). Nagem participated in Southern American biennials as the Bienal Sur at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rosário (AR), the Biennial of Digital Art at CCSP (BR), and Oi Futuro in Rio de Janeiro. She has exhibited at institutions such as SESC (BR), Museum of Image and Sound (BR), Sea Foundation (NL) and participated in festivals such as DieDigitale Dusseldorf (GE), Athens Art Festival (GR), FILE, among others. She integrated residences in Brazil, Uruguay, and Germany. She graduated from the University of Minas Gerais and has an MFA from the Haute École d’Art et Design de Genève, in Switzerland.
