Miguel Chikaoka

Lives and works in Belém, Brasil.

He’s graduated in Electric Engineering from Unicamp, but has always been in the photography field.

He’s initiated his career as a photographer alongside the paper Jornal Resistência da Sociedade Paraense de Defesa dos Direitos Humanos. He was a part of editorials of the magazine Cuíra of the Unipop (Universidade Popular / Popular University) an the magazine GIBI from Agencia Emaús agency. He has also collaborated with Agencia F4 and the Jornal Movimento.

In parallel, he articulated a movement around doing and thinking photography that resulted in the creation of Fotoativa.

As an author he participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Brazil and internationally. His productions transit between images, installations, performances and objects which problematize the senses of seeing beyond the frontiers of photography and image. Some of his works may be found in the collections of institutions such as the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, MASP (São Paulo, Brazil), Museu da Fotografia (Curitiba, Brazil), Museu Casa das Onze Janelas, Museu de Arte Moderna – MAM (São Paulo, Brazil), Museu de Arte do Rio de Janeiro – MAR (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), OEA Museum (USA), Museu da Universidade Federal do Pará – MUFPA (Belém, Brazil).

He’s integrated the committee of evaluation and selection of Projects, Shows, Saloons, and Prizes of art and photography such as Rumos Itaú, Artes Visuais Funarte, Diário Contemporâneo de Fotografia, Arte Pará and Incentivo de Fotografia.


In 2012, He received the award Prêmio Brasil de Fotografia and the Comenda da Ordem do Mérito Cultural – MINC for his contribution to the Brazilian culture and in 2015, he was contemplated by the award Marcantonio Vilaça da Funarte.

He dedicates himself today to research and experimentation of educational practices inspired by approaches of what constitutes the genesis of the photographic process e experimentação de práticas educativas inspiradas em abordagens do que constitui a gênese do processo fotográfico.
