São Joaquim da Barra, Brazil, 1986.
Lives and works in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil.
Born in São Joaquim da Barra, SP, in 1986, Natalia Marques is the daughter of Egbe Awo Asè Iya Mesan Orun, a visual artist, costume designer, art educator and independent curator. Her researches are centered on the relationship between the black population of the interior of São Paulo and the sugarcane industry—an important economic activity in the region since the end of the 19th century—, the tools used and the clothing linked to this economic production, especially in the intersection of these elements with the experience of black women. Her artistic practice unfolds in crossings between performative languages and the field of visuality (such as print and engraving). As an intrinsic part of her thinking and artistic work, she develops educational activities for exhibitions. Natália is a founding member and curator of the literary art collective Encontrão Poético – SP, she is a Slammaster in the spoken poetry championship Slam da Cana – RP, and also a member of the Orunmila Cultural Center in Ribeirão Preto.
