André Ricardo is a painter, in a context in which the painting has been several times put in check – for the modernist tradition and for the contemporary practices. He works, therefore, against the grain of the most current trends of contemporary art. But this support translates, for him, into an artist work for his own time, in which he seeks to operate a synthesis of the elements of urban space through colour.

His motives arise from aspects and objectives seen on routes through the city: between 2011 and 2012, with his series of buckets and excavators, he tried to perceive them as words for the construction of a new painting. It was mostly his form and colour that suggested him compositions. From them he extracted – as we have seen from his most recent work – the grammar of his pieces until they resulted in fully abstract forms.
