São Paulo, Brazil, 1977.
Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Cadu’s practice is characterised by a transdisciplinary approach. His repertoire includes performances, installations, drawings, paintings, sculptures, videos and photographs, influenced by themes linked to systems, repetition, time, circularity and nature. Over the last ten years, his work has also dealt with the social, economic and environmental specificities of the places he is invited to inhabit for periods of time, taking an ethnographic approach to the phenomena at work in these contexts, from which co-participatory processes and the dilution of authorship are initiated.
He is an adjunct professor at PUC-Rio in the Arts and Design department, where he coordinates LINDA – Interdisciplinary Laboratory in Nature Design & Art. He has participated in the 7th Mercosul Biennial (2007), the 30th São Paulo Biennial (2012), the 13th Istanbul Biennial (2013), the 4th End of the World Biennial (2014) and “Anozero’19” – Coimbra Biennial of Contemporary Art (2019). He took part in the 32nd and 35th Panoramas of Brazilian Art (2011/2017). In 2013, the artist was awarded the PIPA Prize and a residency at Residency Unlimited (New York, USA). Winner of the “Radio Krakow 2015” Award (Poland), for the exhibition “Its Gonna Rain”. From 2015 to 2017 he was an artist in residence at the InSite Foundation (Mexico) and Plataforma Atacama (Chile). In 2017, he was commissioned by the National Endowment for the Arts, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and XLab IDEAS to work in Natchez (Mississippi, USA). In 2018, he was commissioned by the Haundenschild Foundation (San Diego, USA) to develop a project at its headquarters. In 2019, he completed a residency with the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Department of Education, at the invitation of Instituto República. He is currently developing projects in partnership with the Museu Bispo do Rosário – Arte Contemporânea (RJ) and the Museu das Imagens do Inconsciente (RJ), as part of PUC-Rio’s DEXPO extension programme. He is represented by Galeria Vermelho (SP), Silvia Cintra + Box4 (RJ) and DotArt (BH).
At the 2013 Finalists’ exhibition at MAM-Rio, Cadu showed an architectural model with the exact dimensions of the hut. The video was made at the hut in the countryside of Rio de Janeiro after he won the prize.
