Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The work results from a blend of languages, from sound and visual arts; my education being in music, piano, composition, including electroacoustic. The early works search for that hybrid territory between sound/time and the space physical/location; Paisagens Subterrâneas (2000) [Eventos Acarte 2000, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisboa] and Mobile (2000) [Ateliê Finep, Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro] expose such transference of creative processes and procedures, applied to the
musical composition and music presentations, to a new context of interaction and contemplation involving people and work.
The installations “Sound Field (2002) [Sound in the Landscape, The Fields Sculpture Park, Ghent, New York], “Escape” (2003) [Zagreb Bank, 22º Music Biennale Zagreb, Zagreb, Croácia], “Residuu” (2005) [Paço dos Açoreanos, 5a Bienal do Mercosul, Porto Alegre, Brazil] and “Sentinelas” (2004, 2008) [Treble, Sculpture Center, New York, are works that intrinsically relate with the surrounding space and architecture.
Through visual and sound devices, strategically located in the space, they indicate invisible paths in an empty space, where sounds developing along space and time, suggest imagined discourses, as in an open composition, of multiple entries and exits, in association with the complexity of the layers of sound. Encompassing realms where the device (loudspeakers, gadgets) and its vicinity, subject and work, complement each other or merge.
The sculptures and objects in general work in the crossing between the physicality of the materials and devices employed (glass, plastics, cold light, loudspeakers, electronic devices, granite, metal, mirrors…), their plastic and visual forms, and sounds and silences, or simply the idea of some sound, determined or not. A sound leads to a thought or inner recollection that, in turn, evokes an atmosphere.
Lately, I have been deepening this inter dependency among the plastic, acoustic and linguistic domains. Recently some of these works such works display the elements functionally
associated with the production of sound, loudspeakers, wires, acoustic materials, completely “de- functionalized”, acting just as a mental device to induce the imagination of a sound or the simple expectation of something that would sound or even talk.[“Palavras Cruzadas”; Art and Patrimony Prize, Iphan 70 years, Paço Imperial; “kms5n6j6jw6EHkuhuf7ytgEQg4jk46a45h”, Galeria Laura Marsiaj, Rio, 2011]
