Lives and works between Vitória, Brazil and Folkestone, United Kingdom.
Rubiane Maia is a Brazilian visual artist based between Folkestone, UK and Vitoria, Brazil. She completed a degree in Visual Arts and a Master degree in Institutional Psychology at Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Her artwork is an hybrid practice across performance, video, installation and writing, occasionally flirting with drawing, painting and collage. In 2015, she took part at the Marina Abramovic workshop’s ‘Cleaning the House’ and participated at the exhibition ‘Terra Comunal – Marina Abramovic + MAI’, at SESC Pompéia, São Paulo with the long durational performance ‘The Garden’ for two consecutive months. In the same year, she produced her first short film ‘EVO’ in collaboration with Renata Ferraz, it was premiered at the 26th Festival Internacional de São Paulo and 22nd Festival de Cinema de Vitória. In 2016, she worked on the conceptual project titled ‘Preparation for Aerial Exercise, the Desert and the Mountain’ which required her to travel to high landscapes of Uyuni (Bolivia), Pico da Bandeira (Espírito Santo/Minas Gerais, BRA) and Monte Roraima (Roraima, BRA/Santa Helena de Uyarén, VEN). In the same year she completed her second short film titled ‘ÁDITO’. Since 2018 she has been working on the creation of an ongoing project called ‘Book-Performance’, composed by a series of actions devised in response to specific autobiographical texts particularly influenced by personal experiences of racism and misogyny. Currently, she is part of the international collective of artist ‘Speculative Landscapes’ a group of four women which, since 2020, has been working on systemic questions about what else institutions can be, when shaped not from stories violence, segmentation and extractions in the territories.

“Multiple layers between time and life interest me, especially the ways in which bodies create and experience their daily micro-revolutions. Working with performance fascinates me for being a field of uncertain actions – meeting place / mismatch / reunion with yourself, with others, and with what is around: a way of being, to take ownership of life, and to take risks. In this sense, an intensity of crisis emerges, disputes, attempts and errors, unavoidable, exposing what happens in this incompleteness, in what is still bent or even fragmented. The rules change and the boundaries are not always safe. I seek to deal with all that is fragile, vulnerable, and even insurmountable in a dimension that sets off the delicate nature, unstable and transitory our human existence.
During this journey the things that touch me become reference: literature, cinema, street life, people, landscapes, and of course, the day to day life with its small particularities, the ‘invisible’ is redolent at events that enliven or overwhelm me. I keep looking for these images, trampling voices, these sensations that we capture almost by accident which could destabilize us. I’m attracted to the variety of balanced/unbalanced states that are able to cross the body, mind, emotions and our memory.”
