Prates works with photography and video, using images appropriated from newspapers and old films as well as personal photographs and images. The artist graduated with a degree in Architecture and Urbanism from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 2003 and has since participated in courses and workshops with other artists. Since 2006, he has been a member of the collective “Cine Água” with the artist Nelton Pellenz. The collective puts on exhibitions and works as a trustee of film shows.

Recent solo shows by the artist include “Paisagens Populares”, at the Centro Cultural São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil, and “Fotografias Recentes” at Galeria Virgílio Calegari, Porto Alegre, Brazil, both in 2012, and “Ficções Apropriadas” at Pinacoteca de Feevale, Novo Hamburgo, Brazil, in 2009. The artist has also participated in the following group exhibitions: “Cinema do Acaso” at Museu Victor Meirelles, Florianópolis, Brazil; the 11th Salão Nacional de Artes de Jataí, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Jataí, Jataí, Brazil; “Alien: Manifestações do Disforme” at the Museum of Art of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil; and “Cromomuseu: Post Pictorialism in the Museological Conex”, also at the Museum of Art of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Recent awards include Açorianos of Visual Arts of Porto Alegre in 2012 and the Brazil Photography Award in 2013.
