Domenico Lancellotti can be considered a self-taught artist, even though he attended the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. He developed as an artist from the practical and simultaneous involvement with works in different areas, whether in the arts, music, or at the intersection between both. His work is located exactly by shifting between music and the visual arts. This fluidity results in partnerships and collaborations, in which it is possible to see a strong feature of his personality: doing “it” together, no matter if “it” is music with the visual arts, cinema with music, performing arts with cooking, or collective compositions.

Composer, musician, performer, artist and producer Lancellotti created, with Kassin and Moreno Veloso the collective “+2” in 2001. The collective, an experimental group, alternated who was at the helm with every work, yet maintained collective control of all production stages (from sound to visual design) until all five albums were released. “+2” also produced art installations, such as the work “Alegria Vai Lá”, which was part of the “Tropicalia” exhibition as curated by Carlos Basualdo (Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, 2005-2006). The collective also created performances with video, live painting, and musical concerts at the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, Videobrasil (São Paulo), Walker Art Centre (Minnesota, USA), Art Institute of Chicago (USA), and Barbican (London, UK).
In 2012, Domenico was one of thirty artists selected from Rio to participate in “Rio Occupation London”, a Brazilian artistic occupation that took place during the London Olympic Games. At that time, he started the recordings for”+2″‘s next album, designed as a soundtrack for a medium-length art film made in collaboration with the director Maria Borba. In addition to this work, he conducted a series of performances that involved music and cooking within a project directed by Christiane Jatahy, one of the curators of “Rio Occupation London”.
In 2013, Lancellotti was invited by “In Drama Festival” (French House Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) to create a performance inspired by Nelson Rodrigues’ classic play “Boca de Ouro”. In it, Alice Ripoll, Camila Pitanga, and the dentist Otavio Machado acted while the audience moved through a dental arcade against a backdrop of music provided by percussionists from Império Serrano Samba School.
Lancellotti also collaborated as a musician, composer, soundtrack designer, scenographer, and art director with other artists, including: Adriana Calcanhotto, Arto Lindsay, Cabelo, Caetano Veloso, Chelpa Ferro, Chiara Banfi, Chrissie Hynde, Christiane Jatahy, Cristina Moura, Danilo Caymmi, Domingos de Oliveira, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Hamilton Vaz Pereira, Jorge Mautner, Laura Lima, Lenora de Barros, Lucia Koch, Luiz Zerbini, Michel Groisman, Sérgio Bernardes, and Titãs, among others.
On the eve of the release of his second solo album, Lancellotti was also participating in the following projects: “Dissonâmbulos” with Chiara Banfi and Bruno Di Lullo, developing and presenting sound sculptures in performances in art galleries and concert halls; “Vamos Estar Fazendo”, an improvisational duo with musician Pedro Sá; “Orquestra Imperial” a gafieira band he founded in 2002 with eighteen other musicians in Rio de Janeiro; and “Meia Banda,” which resulted from his partnership with the composer and bass player Bruno di Lullo. Lancellotti also works with painting, mixed techniques on paper, canvas, and wood. He has participated in several group and solo art exhibitions since 1992. His most recent painting exhibition took place in December 2015 at Feira, an art and design gallery located at Antiga Fábrica Bhering in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Lancellotti appropriates elements from pop culture and the Brazilian musical tradition to draw up a narrative at the same time ironic and melancholic about the present time. Located by shifting between music and visual arts, his work is the result of partnerships and collaborations through which it is possible to glimpse the desire for dialogue, which arise traces of an ethic of collective effort, typical of Rio’s suburbs. The intermediate place of a hybrid author – present either in collaboration and in music intersecting with the visual arts, with film, or performance – is explored as a power space, where the interlocutor’s presence is crucial to the shaping of the work.
