PIPA Prize 2024 nominee

Val Souza was born in São Paulo (SP) and lives between her birth city and Salvador (BA). Her work is developed, above all, through the performance practice, working the circulation of subjectivities through the constant self exposure of her body and the production of images of herself. The artist is drawn on the instruments of philosophy and cultural critics to elaborate other narratives, connections and readings based on iconographic researches on the historical representation of black women in Brazil and the world. This way, her work approaches symbols and speeches that base the Brazilian social imagery and its mechanisms of racialization and oppression, counterpointing them to resumption practices, abundance, autonomy and joy. Her proposing actions, photos, videos, objects and installations influence the past from the present’s urgencies, in such way that invoke other possible futures and elaborate the acting of the body itself before, now and after.
